Chest X-ray B-read provides detailed images to detect signs of lung disease

A chest X-ray B-read, or B-reader interpretation, is a more detailed review of a chest X-ray performed by a radiologist specially trained to identify exposure and signs of lung disease associated with occupational exposure. The B-read is an important step in the diagnosis of diseases associated with asbestos and silica exposure.

Why do you need a B-read?
Since a B-read yields a more detailed interpretation of a chest X-ray, it can identify exposure and signs of lung disease associated with occupational exposures. Testing can encourage timely intervention to eliminate additional exposure and reduce disease progression.

Who are B-readers?
A B-reader is a radiologist specially trained and certified through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to assure expertise in classifying X-rays that may show signs of occupational lung disease. B-readers use strict guidelines, and certification testing must be repeated every five years. In addition to B-reader certification, radiologists must fulfill all state and local licensure requirements to practice medicine.

B-Reader Program History
In 1969, Congress passed the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, which required that coal miners be offered periodic chest radiographic screening. But surveillance studies of those screenings proved radiologist inconsistencies. The NIOSH B-Reader Program was launched in 1974 to establish a pool of physicians with demonstrated competence in classifying chest radiographs to reduce those inconsistencies. The program offered training and certification for physicians using the International Labor Organization International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumonoconiosis. By 1978, the B-Reader Certification was in full swing.

Importance to the Workplace Exposure Research Program
SMART members may experience many occupational exposures through their careers. These exposures have varying latency periods. The NIOSH B-Reader Program assures that every member who participates in the Workplace Exposure Research Program will receive a proper X-ray interpretation for their exposures. Check the schedule to see when your local is coming up at Workplace Exposure Research Program page.
