SMART MAP
Members have access to this Member Assistance Program, a mental health awareness action program that educates union members on solutions, helping them and their families access resources when they need them. SMART MAP mentors are well-respected union members who have been through training to act as mental health first responders, providing a safety net when someone most needs it.
Classes and trainings
- Safety Champions Conference is an annual gathering that brings labor and management together to discuss all aspects of health and safety on the job site and beyond. In addition to two days of presentations and informal gatherings, the Safety Matters Awards and Safety Design Contest winners are announced at this event.
- OSHA Outreach courses are available online to members at a reduced rate via 360training.com.
- SMOHIT Learn classes are available in English and Spanish on the SMOHIT website, covering a range of topics.
- SMART MAP sessions are scheduled on a rolling basis. These three-day, in-person sessions are kept to 25 participants to foster intimacy and honest communication on a variety of topics relevant to members’ mental health.
- Peer-to-Peer training, as part of SMART MAP, is offered to members who want to be a mental health first responder on the job site, helping union brothers and sisters in crisis find resources.

SMOHIT Helpline
Available 24/7 at (877) 884-6227, this number is staffed by a mental health professional who is able to lend an ear during times of stress and help members coordinate local resources for long-term assistance. While not a crisis line, the SMOHIT Helpline has helped members deal with grief and trauma, alcohol and drug issues, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), family issues, work stress and debt concerns. There is no issue too big or small.

LifeSpeak
This on-demand video streaming platform gives members access to expert-led fitness, nutrition and mindfulness classes on their personal devices anytime, anywhere. This benefit is available to up to five family members or friends, so you can participate together even while traveling for work.

Health Screenings
The health screenings research program has been a SMOHIT benefit for decades, and they will continue to be. SMOHIT covers the cost of Chicago Med Group, the pulmonary function test, chest X-ray and B-reading of the chest X-ray, performed by a physician certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Any additional recommended testing — as well as annual exams, blood work and blood pressure — will go through the member’s medical insurance and local care team.
For additional information on the health screenings, or to fill out an eligibility form, visit the health screenings page.

Toolbox Talks
Toolbox Talks are short-form, practical lessons on mental and physical well-being. Hundreds of topics are available in English and Spanish, designed to be presented by supervisors and encourage conversation and engagement with peers on the job site.
SMOHIT online shop
This feature on the SMOHIT website provides safety posters, stickers, magnets and the Sheet Metal Safety Handbook at no cost to registered users. Members who qualify can also order doses of naloxone via this site.
